Kaleb’s birthday

Today would have been Kaleb’s 2nd birthday. We lost him to a tragic accident when he was 7 months old, when my sister propped up a bottle and left him in our parents room while we were at work and he suffocated.

Two years ago today he was born. This is his birth story:

There was 2 weeks til my due date. The day started out like any other… I was totally ready to get the kid out! I was joking around with my bosses wife (also my co-worker and milking partner) I was only working half days. We were on a cold streak and she told me that I should wait until next week to have the baby, because it would be warmer then. The dr.s were talking about inducing a week early since I had some problems with Glenn and he was 10 pounds… and it looked like this baby was going to be big also. I went out to use the skid-steer and clean one of the pens. After I was done I went to let the group of cows back in, there was 1 cow in the group that I always kept an eye out for, because she like to come after me. As I opened the gate and turned, she was right there… I was freaking out, if she slammed me into the wall it wouldn’t be good. So as she was coming after me, I tried to think fast and grabbed the gate and slid under it. I’m very flexible and pregnancy didn’t change that. The gate is about 3 feet of the ground, maybe a little shorter. I was thankful that she didn’t get me, it was a close one. I took a couple of steps and it felt like my water broke. I was leaking something and my pants (black sweatpants) were soaked to my knees. I went in and told Lori (my milking partner and bosses wife, and very good friend of mine) that I think I had to go home, I’m pretty sure my water just broke… But I wasn’t having ANY contractions. After I went into the bathroom to go pee, I noticed that it was actually blood! My water hadn’t broke, but I was bleeding bad. After I came out one of my bosses confronted me and asked if I needed him to drive me home. I told him no I could drive myself and that my water hadn’t broke, but I was bleeding bad. Now that I think about it, I should have taken him up on the offer in case I would have passed out or something, but nobody ever said I was smart! lol. After I called Forest and couldn’t get him to answer the phone, I was secretly freaking out. Although I think both my bosses and Lori were freaking out more that me. After I got home, Forest had just gotten home from going to the gas station. I changed cloths, and packed some cloths for Glenn just in case they decided to keep me although I was half expecting that they would just send me home since the bleeding wasn’t nearly so bad, I could still feel the baby moving, so I knew he wasn’t dead. Then we went to my parents, since they were on the way to the hospital. Almost an hour drive total. Then we get into the hospital, and the receptionist has to call and find out weather to send me to OB or to ER. Off to OB we go. My dr.’s on call, yay! Put a monitor on me to monitor the baby, call ultrasound to come bring a machine in the room so we can get an u/s of the baby. The dr. called over to a bigger hospital (they are a branch off them) to find out what they wanted them to do. They ordered a series of tests and out of a total score of 10 the baby got a 2. He wasn’t doing good. I was informed they were taking me in for a c/section as soon as the surgeon on call got there. Meanwhile my Dr. and the Pediatrician are reading up on infant revival (to brush up on it) This is starting to freak me out! As they are bringing me into surgery and am getting a spinal, the surgeon looks at me and says “I remember you! I repaired your bottom.” Asked me if I preferred a bikini cut or up and down cut. I just want my baby to be ok! But if I have to choose then Bikini! As they are taking him out the anesthesiologist says it’s a girl! (I’m thinking What! At least I brought an outfit for both just in case) Wait… Wait… It’s a boy. Kaleb León Lukes. All I can think about is he looks big! lol. 9 pounds 7 oz. 20 inches long. My dr. said that he was the loudest screaming baby that he has ever heard of all the s/cections that he has assisted on.

Kaleb is such a handsome boy!
I know that you miss him terribly, just as I miss my 3 Angels. I hope that you can find some comfort knowing that we will be with them again some day — for Eternity!
